WHANNEL, Murray Deane (1928 - 1995)

Obituary

Murray D WHANNEL was born in Traer, IA on September 6, 1928, the son of Peter and Myrtle (McEWEN) WHANNEL. He graduated from Traer High School with the class of 1946 and then attended Monmouth College in Illinois and then Iowa State University in Ames, IA. In 1951 Murray returned to Traer to take over their family trucking business due to the death of his father. On October 12, 1956 Murray married Sandra YOUNG at the United Presbyterian Church in Traer and they made their home in Traer all of their married life. Murray was an active member of the community as a member of the Chamber of Commerce and had a 30 year perfect attendance with the Traer Loins Club. He was a charter member of Traer Ambulance Service, serving as captain, was a former board member of First community Bank and Trust in, was presently serving as board member of the Buckingham Cemetery and had served as a trustee and elder of the United Presbyterian Church. In addition to his trucking business, Murray was a hog buyer for Rath Packing Co. until his retirement in 1984. Murray’s free moments were spent in his rose garden & drinking coffee with his friends. Murray’s death came suddenly on Wednesday, August 28, 1996 at Covenant Medical Center at the age of 67 years. He was preceded in death by his parents. Murray is survived by his wife Sandra, two sons, Brian and wife Lyla of Traer and Neil and wife Penny of Rochester, MN, on daughter Diane Whannel of Cedar Rapids, IA and four grandchildren.

Following the service family and friends are invited to attend the luncheon at the United Presbyterian Church.
