WHANNEL, John Donald (1910 - 1999)

John Donald WHANNEL was born November 16, 1910 on a farm south of Dinsdale, IA. He was the seventh child in a family of ten children born to William and Sarah (REID) WHANNEL. John received his education in Geneseo and Hudson schools and then began working as a farmer. On November 24, 1934 he married Hazel HATTON at the Methodist Parsonage at Waterloo, IA. John and Hazel then farmed near Traer and later moved into town where John worked for Diamond Bros. Grocery. John then worked for Wieck Bros. Oil Co. fro several years before forming the A. W. E. Partnership of Errol Allen, Forrest Edwards & John WHANNEL. They operated a well known service station on Hwy. 63 that sold the best ice cream in Traer. They sold the business in 1971 and John kept active helping out at A. W. E. and Cecil Rassmussen Philips 66 for many years. John was a long time member of the Traer Volunteer Fire Dept., the Traer Lions Club and Odd Fellows Lodge. On Sunday, May 23, 1999 John’s death came at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer at the age of 88 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Hazel, a granddaughter, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. He is survived by 3 daughters; Shirley LIGHTY of Delhi, IA, Sharon BOLT of Mt. Auburn, IA and Mary McKINLEY of Traer, 4 sisters; Huetta SOLTAU of Davenport, IA, Beth WIEBEN of Dysart, IA, Dorothy BOWENS of Fort Dodge, IA, and Beulah FREET of Alexandria, LA, 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
