John C. FLEMING

Funeral services for John C. FLEMING, 73, of Traer, were held Wednesday morning, May 24, 2000, at the United Presbyterian Church in Traer with the Rev. Rick Vesely officiating. Burial was in Buckingham Cemetery, rural Traer. Military graveside rites were conducted by Kubik-Finch Post #142 of the Traer American Legion.

He died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following a short illness.

A memorial fund has been established.

Music for the funeral service was provided by Wayne Dunlavey, vocalist, and Mary Nelson, organist.

Casket bearers were Lyle Buddenhagen, Mike Reuman, LeRoy Wood, Jay Owens, Lyle Bitcon and Ron Angel. Honorary Casket bearers were members of the Traer Fire Department.

Floral tributes were handled by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Mundt, Pat Lundak and Marlys Buddenhagen.

John Congdon FLEMING was born July 22, 1926, north of Traer, Ia., the son of Paul C. and Ruthal (CONGDON) FLEMING. At an early age John moved with his family to Traer where he attended school and graduated from Traer High School with the Class of 1944. In July of that same year he entered the U.S. Navy where he served his country during World War II.

In November 1946 he received his discharge from the Navy and returned to Traer where he operated the Skelly Gas Station.

On June 18, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mildred ROHACH at Marshalltown. The couple made their home all their married life in Traer where John worked with his father driving a truck at the Skelly Bulk Station.

In 1972 John and Millie began working together at the Traer Country Club and for 20 years they were greens keepers until their retirement in 1992.

John was a member of the Traer Fire Department for 40 years, Traer Country Club, and a 50-year member of the Traer American Legion and the Hesperia Masonic Lodge. He also served as a volunteer for the Traer Ambulance Service and was a member of the Buckingham Cemetery Board.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Myrl.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, of Traer; one daughter and her husband, Jeri and Richard EGLI of Washington, Ia.; one brother, Lorin FLEMING of Cedar Falls and four grandsons.

Overton Family Funeral Home - Traer was in charge of arrangements.
