Charles Walter DEE

Funeral services for Charles Walter DEE, 89, of Grinnell, and formerly of Traer, were held Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Officiating was the Rev. Del Dawes, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Grinnell. Burial took place in the Brooklyn Cemetery, Brooklyn, Ia. Walter died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Friendship Manor in Grinnell.

Organist for the funeral service was Margaret Wheeler. Casket bearers where Lyle BECK, Marvin Beck, Jerry DAVIS, Robert GRITSCH, Roger GRITSCH and Erich Noll.

Charles Walter DEE was born Jan. 6, 1909, near Hartwick, Ia., the son of Mike and Melinda (ROUDABUSH) DEE. He attended rural school near his home and was a 1927 graduate of Hartwick High School.

On Dec. 4, 1931, he was united in marriage to Leota THOMPSON at the Presbyterian parsonage in Grinnell. The couple farmed near Brooklyn and Malcom prior to moving to Traer in 1947. He operated an oil tank service in the Traer area until his retirement in 1977.

In 1989 Walter and Leota moved to Grinnell and Walter had been a resident of Friendship Manor since 1996.

He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church. He enjoyed tending to his garden, playing cards, bowling, reading and socializing with family and friends. He was a former secretary of several bowling leagues while living in Traer.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Leota in 1997 and one sister, Lois GRITSCH.

Walter is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Alma DEE of Grand Island, Neb.; one sister, Marie BECK of Malcom; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Charles Walter DEE Memorial Fund.
