Walter “Shorty” BRANDT

Funeral services were held for Walter George “Shorty” BRANDT, 82, of Gladbrook, Monday, July 12, 1993, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Traer. The Rev. Thomas Purtell officiated at the service with Catherine McLean serving as organist. Burial was at St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery, Traer.

Casket bearers were Dale McKENNA, Dean McKENNA, Dennis Gruchow, Bob Yuska, Joe McKENNA and Ken Yuska. Attending to flower arrangements were Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Gruchow and Mr. and Mrs. Allen Hulme.

Walter George “Shorty” BRANDT was born May 1, 1911, in Reinbeck, son of Herman and Martha (MAAR) BRANDT. Walter lived with his family on a farm near Fredericksburg, before moving to Buckingham around 1923. He attended school in Fredericksburg, Buckingham and Traer.

Walter was united in Marriage to Irene Mary McKENNA July 7, 1943, at Blessing Immaculate Conception Church, and they made their home in Buckingham. Walter worked for Bredfelt Trucking in Buckingham, and from 1944 until 1955, he owned and operated a cream route out of the Hudson Co-op. From 1955 until his retirement in 1974, he worked at Funk Brothers Seed Plant in Traer. Following his retirement, Walter worked part-time at the Silver Streak Lanes in Traer. He lived in Traer until entering the Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook in 1993.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Irene, in 1970 and his parents.

He is survived by one son, Daniel of Marshalltown; a daughter, Mrs. John (Teresa) SCHLORHOLTZ of Percival; five grandchildren; and a special friend, Marian Gruchow of Traer.

Overton Family Funeral Homes, Traer was in charge of arrangements.
