Harold BRANDT To Celebrate His 90th Birthday

Harold BRANDT of Traer will celebrate his 90th birthday Sept. 8, 1993.

Harold and his family will be marking the occasion with a celebration Sunday, Sept. 5. Family members are expected to arrive in Traer Sunday morning in time to attend the United Methodist Church with Harold, then go to Waterloo to have dinner and visit.

Family members expected include Mrs. Douglas (Barbara) BRANDT of Marquette; Barbara’s mother, Velma Philiph of Waterloo, Harold’s grandson, Eric and his wife Bobbi and children Ben and Krystal of Cedar Rapids; and Harold’s granddaughter, Melissa and her husband, Michael MICHELSON and son Zachary of Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services for W. Harold BRANDT, 91, of Traer, were held Friday, July 28, at the United Methodist Church in Traer with burial in Geneseo Cemetery, rural Buckingham. He died Tuesday, July 25, 1995, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following a short illness.

The Rev. Marshall Monthei officiated at the service. Joleen Edwards served as organist. Music was provided by Wayne Dunlavey, vocalist and the United Methodist Choir.

Casket bearers were Denny Berger, Dr. Thomas Wicks, Donald Stansbery, Gary Kruse, Harold Vorba and Mark Keefer. Floral tributes were handled by Mr. and Mrs. James Abernathy and Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Whannel.

Wesley Harold BRANDT was born Sept. 8, 1903, near Victor, Iowa, the son of J. Henry and Mary (SCHMIDT) BRANDT. Harold attended country school and graduated from Victor High School in the Class of 1921. He continued his education at Cornell College before joining his father in the Wahl-Brandt Lumber Company at Victor for several years.

Harold was united in marriage to Frances MEEKER at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe MEEKER, on Sept. 7, 1928.

The couple lived in Waterloo, Dubuque and Rockford, Ill., for several years while Harold was employed by Rath Packing Company of Waterloo. They were then transferred to Chicago and Peoria before moving to Traer, where they purchased a grocery business in 1950.

Their son, Douglas, later joined them in the business and Harold and Frances retired in 1969.

Following Frances’ death Dec. 14, 1992, Harold continued to make his home in Traer and remained active in his church and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed music and enjoyed singing in the church choir and community chorus.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Frances, one son, Douglas; a grandson; two brothers, and one sister.

Harold is survived by his daughter and her husband, Corrine and Tod ELSTON of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; his daughter-in-law, Barbara BRANDT of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
