BOHNSTENGEL, Edward F (1899 - 1991)

OBITUARY

Edward F. BOHNSTENGEL was born in Crystal Township in Tama County on April 10, 1899, the son of Fred and Mary (KRAMBECK) BOHNSTENGEL.

Ed received his education in a country school, and then worked on area farms before starting a shoe shop in Traer. In 1920, Ed opened a Saddle and Bridle Shop and on February 22, 1937, Ed married Alvena HELM at Vinton, Iowa. They made their home all their married life in Traer. Ed was active on Main Street for 60 years in the harness business where he sold up to 175 saddles a year and repaired up to 650 sets of harness annually. People came from all over the country just to do business at the harness shop. In April of 1979, Ed sold the business. The name was changed to D & T Western, and Ed remained active in the business until his retirement. In recent months, Ed’s health had failed and he was a patient at Covenant Medical Center at Waterloo where died Friday, September 6, 1991 at the age of 92 years. He was a member of Ripley United Church of Christ and president of the Traer Saddle Club for many years. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John, Louis and William; two sisters Maggie BOHNSTENGEL and Emma SCHMIDT. Ed is survived by his wife Alvena of Traer and one brother Roy of Traer.
