Raymond “Ray” Jackson AXON (1916 - 1999)

Public graveside services for Raymond “Ray” AXON, 82, of Traer were held Wednesday morning, Feb. 10, at Buckingham Cemetery, rural Traer with the Rev. Rick VESELY of the Traer United Presbyterian Church officiating.

Ray died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following a short illness.

A memorial fund has been established.

Raymond Jackson AXON, known as Ray to family and friends, was born Feb. 18, 1916, in Traer, the son of Bert and Kate (STUEBEN) AXON. Ray grew up on a farm east of Traer.

On Jan. 9, 1943, he was united in marriage to Genevieve KRAUS in Waterloo. The couple lived on a farm east of Traer until Genevieve’s death in 1962.

Ray worked for Construction Machinery in Waterloo during the 1960s.

On Jan. 11, 1964, he married Shirley SIEMENS-KLINZING. In 1968 the couple opened the AXON Recreation center in Traer, which later became the AXON Bar and Grill.

Ray was a member of the Traer Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed fishing, playing pool and was a Hawkeye fan. He will be remembered as a strong willed and straightforward man, who was willing to say what was on his mind.

Preceding him in death, were his parents, his first wife, Genevieve; a son, Thomas; three sisters, Alice VESELY, Midge GOOS and Margaret in infancy and two brothers, Leonard and Johnny in infancy.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley of Traer; two sons, Jim and Marsha AXON of Frankfurt, KY and Rusty AXON of Westminster, CO; a daughter, Julie and Joel MASK of Traer; two stepsons, Hansie and Jan SCHUTTERLE of Westminster, CO and Randy SCHUTTERLE of Des Moines; a step-daughter, Roxie and Craig KONICEK of Traer; one sister, Leona VEST of Traer; two grandchildren; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and 10 step-grandchildren.
