Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Herman, 82 year-old Tama county pioneer, die Tuesday evening at about 5:30 o'clock in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alva Flowers, east of Tama. Mrs. Herman had been an invalid for ten years, her illness beginning with rheumatism. She suffered a stroke last Sunday morning and did not again regain consciousness.

The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Mason's funeral parlors.

Mary Elizabeth Rhine was born Sept. 28, 1848, in Quaker City, Guernsey County, Ohio. In 1857, the Rhine family came to Tama county, settling on a 160-acre farm on the site where the town of Tama now stands. They mad ethe trip west in a covered wagon drawn by oxen.

Mrs. Herman spent all of the remainder of her life in Tama county, most of it on farms a few miles east of Tama. She married to Ludwig Herman on May 22, 1879. Three children were born to them, Harry Herman of Iliff, Colo., Walter Herman of Sioux City, and Mrs. Alva Flowers of Tama.

Mr. Herman died about thirteen years ago, Mrs. Herman has made her home with her daughter-in-law for the last ten and one half years. During all her long years as an invalid, she was never able to leave her bed, and her daughter gave her every care. Mrs. Herman was a strong believer in Christianity and an earnest student of the Bible.

She is survived by three children, five grandchildren,a nd two sister, Mrs. Nancy Yount of Canada and Mrs. Rosa Hooghkirk of Lawton. Two brothers and two sisters preceeded her in death. A number of nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.
