Very long obit, much of it has been omitted.

Ellen Sarah Hooghkirk was born in Lancingburgh, N.Y., November 17th 1827. Then as a small child, her parents moved to Albany, N.Y., and in that city, October 11th, 1843, she was married to James Burge. They resided in New York state, in various places, until September, 1851, when they moved to Iowa, locating in Davenport. Four years later, April 1856, they came to Tama County, taking up their residence in Toledo, remaining there for ten years, then moving to the new and comfortable home, which was destroyed by fire several years ago and rebuilt, a mile and a quarter west of this place, and there they lived, loved, respected and admired by all. Three children were born to them, Anna, William and James, all of whom were with their mother, as was the husband of over half a century, when the death angel appeared and took their loved one to her home across the dark and silent river.

The funeral services were held, Sunday being carried out as per her requst, at her home. Rev Clarke, of the Methodist church, made a few kind remarks, several hymns sung by the musicians - Mrs. Bracken, Mrs. Brokhausen, Mrs. Wonser, Mesers. Tims and Ferguson - and old friends and neighbors, Mesers, Willett, Soleman, Bracken, Jackson, Murdough and Struble, tenderly laid the remains to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Toledo.
