August Ketelsen Naturalization Document

The United States of America - State of Iowa - Tama County:

Be it remembered that at a term of the District Court, holden in and for said County in the Court House therein, at Toledo on the 9th day of October in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and five, there was present the honorable Obid Caswell, sole presiding Judge, W. C. Vest, sheriff of said County, and Chas Benesh, Clerk of said Court, when the following among other proceedings were had to-wit:

August Juergen Ketelsen, a native of Germany and at present residing within said State, appeared in open Court accompanied by Hans J. Peters of Tama County, Iowa and John Lorenzen of Tama County, Iowa, as witnesses, and made application to be admitted to become a citizen of the United States, as follows, to-wit:

Affidavit of Applicant.
STATE OF IOWA, Tama County, ss:

I, August Ketelsen, do solemnly swear that for the past five years I have been residing within the UNITED STATES, that on the 18th day of September, 1903, I filed my declaration on oath before Chas Benesh, Clerk of the District Court of Iowa in and for Tama County, a court of record, having common law jurisdiction and using a seal, that it was bona fide my intention to become a citizen of the UNITED STATES, and to remove forever all allegiance to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to the Emperor of Germany of whom I was heretofore a subject.

And I do declare on oath that I do not disbelieve in and am not opposed to all organized government, that I am not a member of and am not affiliated with any organization entertaining and teaching any such disbelief in or opposition to all organized government, that I do not advocate or teach the duty, necessity or propriety of the unlawful assaulting or killing of any officer or officers, either of specific individuals or of officers generally of the government of the UNITED STATES or of any other organized government because of his or their official character, and that I have not violated any of the provisions of Chapter 1012 passed at the Second Session of the Fifty-seventh Congress of the UNITED STATES, being an act entitled, "An Act to Regulate the Immigration of Aliens into the UNITED STATES," and that I will support the Constitution of the UNITED STATES, and that I do absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to the power above named. I do further solemnly swear that I have not borne any hereditary title, or been of the orders of nobility in the country from which I came.
