TRI COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Friday, January 13, 2005.

Joel David Hansen, 45, of Huxley, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, of brain cancer at Israel Family Hospice in Ames.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 6, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley with the Rev. Tom Hilger officiating. Burial was at Fjeldberg Church Cemetery.

Joel was born in Harlan, IA on September 20, 1960, to Charles and Marilyn (Westphalen) Hansen. He was a resident of the Huxley area since 1987.

He earned a bachelors degree in psychology at the University of Iowa, a masters in horticulture and a Ph.D. in biochemistry both from Iowa State University. He was a scientist at Iowa State DNA Research Facility.

He married Marcy Sager on May 21, 1983, in Atlantic, IA. Joel shared his musical gifts at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church where he was a member.

Immediate survivors include his wife, Marcy Hansen and their two sons, Jacob and Andrew, all of Huxley; Father, Charles Hansen of Atlantic, IA; two brothers, Tom (Chris) Hansen of Marshfield WI and Derek Hansen of Elk Horn, IA; mother-in-law, Evelyn Sager of Atlantic, IA; and many other dear family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn; paternal grandparents, Emanuel and Martha Hansen; and maternal grandparents, Arnold and Erma Westphalen; and father-in-law, Harvey Sager.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater was entrusted with arrangements. Memorials may be sent to Israel Family Hospice in Ames.
