S. Tiller Knutson, 90, of Story City, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 12, at the Bethany Manor Nursing Home in Story City. Funeral services will be at 10:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial will follow in the Lake Center Cemetery near Stanhope.
Tiller was born February 5, 1915, in Valier, Mont., to Simon and Tina (Olson) Knutson. Following the death of his father when he was three, Tiller was raised by his aunt and uncle, Erick and Julia Hove. He married Angie Mickelson on Feb. 28, 1937, at Randall. They farmed near Stanhope for many years, retiring in 1980. They moved to Story City in 1990. In addition to farming, Tiller was a skilled carpenter, renovating several homes in Boone. He also sold Crow's Hybrid Seed Corn and later worked at the County Assessor's office in Webster City following his retirement from farming.
Tiller was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City and was formerly a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Jewell, serving as a Sunday school teacher for several years.
He is survived by one son, Steve Knutson of Deer Park, Ill.; two daughters, Mary Rios of Denver, Colo. and Jan Buland of Fairfax, Va.; one sister, Beulah Olson of Story City and five grandchildren, Mike Hjermstad, Jeff Restifo, Becky Rios, Doug Knutson and Ross Knutson. Tiller was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one grandson (Dale Hjermstad) and one brother (Harold Knutson).
Visitation will be on Sunday, Jan. 15, 3-5 p.m. at the Bethany Manor Nursing Home in Story City.
Memorials may go to Israel Family Hospice in Ames, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City or the Michael J. Fox Parkinson's Foundation.
Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is handling the arrangements.
