TRI COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, December 15, 2005.

Leland M. Gardner, 89, of Cambridge, Iowa, passed away Monday, December 12, 2005 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines following a heart attack. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 Friday, December 16 at the Cambridge United Methodist Church with the burial in the Cambridge Cemetery.

Leland was born November 21, 1916, in Clear Lake, Iowa, the son of Earl C. and Esta (Mount) Gardner. He was united in marriage to Neoma Hennick on April 9, 1939. Neoma preceded Leland in death December 28, 1999. Leland graduated from Clear Lake High School and later joined his parents and brother in Mingo, Iowa. The family then moved to Cambridge, where they owned and operated Gardner's Garage. In 1954, Leland was appointed to the Cambridge Post Office, as Postmaster, where he served until his retirement in 1978.

Many of his life time activities included: Past chief of Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department, as well as past president of Story County Firemen's Assoc. He served as councilman and city clerk of Cambridge. He was chairman of the Troop Committee of Boy Scouts and a member of Order of the Arrow. Leland was past Master of Tabernacle Masonic lodge as well as past Worthy Patron of Order of the Eastern Star, New Hope Chapter. Other activities include National Assoc. of Postmasters of the U.S.; member of the National League of Postmasters and past president of Tri-County Postmasters. Leland was a member of the Cambridge United Methodist Church where he was a choir member, member of the official board, as well as Sunday school teacher.

Following retirement, Leland & Neoma enjoyed their lake home in Minnesota during the summer, but always looked forward to their trip to Apache Jct., AZ, spending the winter with their many friends in Bonita Vista Park. Fishing, dancing and playing cards were just a few of the many things he enjoyed. They also enjoyed the many trips taken with their Air Stream trailer. Leland served for many years as chairman of the park association in Arizona. In 2004, Leland moved to Ballard Creek in Huxley, Iowa, where he had many friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Gardner of Bondurant, Iowa, and his son Lawrence (Larry) L. Gardner of Bondurant, Iowa. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Neoma, and his beloved brother, Lawrence E. Gardner. His enjoyment of life and his great spirit live on in the great memories we all have of Leland.

The visitation will be Thursday after 3:00 with the family present from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater.
