Death

Lena Barkema

Lena Barkema, age 93, died Sunday, July 18, 2004 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell with Pastor W. Michael Werner officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.

Lena Jeanette Barkema was born July 13, 1911 in Gilbert to Lars and Anna Severina (Haugland) Tesdall. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Lena attended school in Story City. On March 9, 1933 Lena married Willis Timothy Barkema in Story City. They farmed near Jewell.

Lena was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, the Bethesda Lutheran Church Women, the neighborhood birthday club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a volunteer at Bethany Manor in Story City for 21 years.

Survivors include four sons, Paul (Anna) Barkema, Wallace (Judy) Barkema and Richard (Diane) Barkema all of Jewell; and Robert (Suzanne) Barkema of Muscatine; 11 grandchildren, Steve Claude, Terry Ketter, Tim Barkema, David Barkema, Kay Kepford, Douglas Barkema, Dennis Barkema, Shelli Seibert, Eric Barkema, Troy Barkema and Travis Barkema; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Alice Smuck of Dunbar, Helen Severseike and Hazel Lybarger, both of Story City; two brothers, Abel Tesdall of Jewell and Harris Tesdall of Ames; and a sister-in-law, Mae Buzick of Webster City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1980, a son, David Eugene; four brothers and three sister.

A memorial fund has been established for the Bethesda Lutheran Church elevator fund.
