OBITUARY

CORNELIUS J. VOLD

Cornelius Johannesen Vold was born in Tysvaer Parish, Stavanger, Norway, Dec.23, 1821, and died at his home in Story City at 11 o'clock p. m., June 2, 1912, at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 9 days.

His parents died when he was five years old and from that time on til 1846 he made his home with his sister, Bertha Vold. In 1846 he immigrated to America and was married to Julie Anderson in New York. The newly married couple then moved to Muskego, Wis., and a short time afterwards to the Fox River settlement. Some years later they moved to LaSalle county, Ill., where Mr. Vold bought land near Leland, on which they made their home for a number of years.

His wife dying in 1872, he was married again a few years later to Gina Olson Fore.

In the spring of 1878 he moved to Story City, where he built a business house and went into business with his son Henry. This building is still standing, being the one next to the Herald office and occupied by the Skaff dry goods business.

For some years the Vold family made their home on a farm north of town but the last years of deceased's life were spent in the town among the people who had come to know and honor him for his sterling worth.

With his first marriage he had ten children, four of whom died at an early age and two later, namely Mrs. Anne Anderson in Leland, Ill., 14 years ago and Mrs. Julia Corneliussen at Alta six months ago. The surviving children are Mrs. Bertha Johnson of Leland, Henry of Chicago, Abel of Grand Forks, N. D., and Malachi of Jeffries, Minn., all of whom were present at the funeral of their dear father.

With his second wife he had four children, two dying at an early age and two, namely Julius and Berthel, with their mother survive.

The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the St. Petri church, Rev. Halvorson officiating and the mortal remains were laid to rest in the Fairview cemetery, there to await the resurrection call at the judgment day.

May he rest in peace!
