EARLY PIONEER DIES SUDDENLY

Wife of Civil War Veteran Passed Away Last Monday Morning After Only a Few Days Illness. Leaves Large Family and Numerous Friends.

This community was saddened when it learned last Monday morning that Mrs. C. Logan had passed away after only a few days illness. Mrs. Logan had been about her daily household duties until late Thursday evening and it was not until Friday morning that Mr. Logan noticed that she was unable to attend to her work. In the afternoon her condition became alarming and medical aid was summoned. Everything that could be done by loving hands was done for her, but she kept sinking until death came quietly and without any warning at six o'clock on Monday morning.

Julia Duea was born near Lisbon, Grundy County, Illinois, on August 10, 1853 and was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Duea, who were among the first settlers in this community, having driven overland from Illinois in 1856 to seek a home in the then practically unknown prairies of Iowa. As a child she had to endure the hardships of this trip in covered wagons and with no roads to travel over and fording of creeks and rivers, and after their arrival at their destination, it was for several years a continuous struggle.

On June 26, 1872, she was united in marriage to Mr. J. H. Boyd by Rev. N. Amlund, and to this unions four children were born three of whom survive their mother. They are: Mr. O. S. Boyd of this place, Mrs. J. M. Mason of Montivideo, Minn.k and Mrs. O. P. Teig of this place. On October 9, 1884, her husband passed away and three weeks later a daughter, Rachel, followed her father to the final rest.

On March 15, 1888, the deceased again entered into the holy bonds of matrimony with Mr. C. Logan, Rev. C. C. Holder performing the ceremony. To this union, five children were born, they being Mrs. E. B. Christian of Roland, Mrs. C. S. Tesdahl of Radcliffe, Mrs. K. Mehus of Roland and Mr. Noel Logan of Oskaloosa. Mrs. Logan had been a mother to Mr. Logan's children by a former marriage, they being Henry G. Logan, Pipestone, Minn.; Mrs. H. M. Sparboe, Webster City, Iowa; N. C. Logan, Ada, Minn.;Mrs. Jonas Christian, Roland and Mrs. P. S. Larson of Minneapolis. Mr. and Mrs. Logan also took into their home the former's niece, Mrs. M. C. Duea, of Alexandria, Minn., while she was a minor and the past few years, Mrs. Logan's niece, Miss Ruby Duea, has found a home under their roof.

Besides her aged husband, who was a veteran of the Civil War, and the above named children, the deceased leaves 26 grandchildren, three brothers, Rasmus Duea, Roland; Oscar Duea; Rice, Minn.; Rev. Edward Duea of Slater; and one sister, Mrs. J. E. Thompson of Roland, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Logan was one of the quiet home loving women, who had won the respect of a large circle and there was none who learned to know her, but who loved her. She was a faithful member and Salem church and a regular attendant in Ladies aid society and other activities of the church.

Funeral services are being held this afternoon from Salem church after which interment will take place in the Roland cemetery.
