MILITARY FUNERAL HELD SATURDAY

Veteran of Spanish American War Dies After Lingering Illness. Funeral Services Under Auspices of American Legion.

Lars Enge passed away at the home of his mother, Mrs. B. L. Enge, Wednesday morning of last week following an illness of some time suffering from cancer of the neck. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and the Roland Post of the American Legion had charge of the funeral last Saturday. After a short service at the home the procession of soldiers, mourners and others proceeded to the Bergen Lutheran church where the funeral services were held, conducted by Rev. M. O. Sumstad.

Following the service at the church, the procession led to the Roland cemetery where the remains were laid in their final resting place with due military honors paid him by the American Legion, his comrades in arms who stood at attention when the three salutes were fired followed by the taps being sounded, thereby closing the life of this citizen and soldier on this earth.

Lars Olai Enge was born at Moe, Norway, March 5, 1871, and died October 4, 1923, thereby being at the age of 52 years, 6 months, and 29 days at the time of his death. He immigrated to this country with his parents in the year 1882 who settled on a farm near Roland.

He served two and one-half years in the United States Army and while in service took part in the Spanish-American War both in Cuba and the Philippine Islands. It was while he was stationed in the Philippines that he was wounded and on account of this was discharged. He lived for some years at the Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown and for the past year and a half he has made his home with his mother.

He leaves to mourn his death, his aged mother, Mrs. B. L. Enge and one sister, Mrs. Severt Sjurson both of this place. One brother and two sisters, also his father have preceded him in death.

[Submitter note: The middle name is difficult to read. Other sources give Lars Oli or Lars B.]
