WELL KNOWN BUILDER WAS BORN IN NORWAY

Andrew Langland Came to America in 1894

Andrew Langland, whose death December 12, 1928, was chronicled in the Herald last month, was born in Stumo in the parish of Olen, Norway, January 21, 1871. When 8 years old his parents moved to Vikedal, near Stavanger, where he grew to manhood. At the age of 23 he immigrated from Norway and came to Jewell, Iowa, in August, 1894, where he stayed 6 years. In 1900 he came to Story City and here he has lived since with the exception of two years in Sioux City.

He was a carpenter by trade and worked a while as such for Mr. Saldal; but he soon started his own business of carpenter and builder and many of the modern houses in Story City have been planned and built by him. His last work was the supervision of the neat little telephone office on Penn St.

He was a faithful and active member of the Immanuel Lutheran church and rendered many a service to his beloved congregation. When the new church was being built he was the chairman of the building committee and gave much time and valuable assistance in the construction of the edifice. In later years he was also seriously concerned about the spiritual welfare of the congregation and a faithful witness for Jesus both in public and private.

He was in poor health about a year before his death and yet the end came sooner than expected. But although bodily weak and exhausted his death was that of a victorious Christian and confessed to the last that "The blood of Jesus cleanseth from all sins."

In 1901 he was united in marriage to Minnie Swenson of Nerstrand, Norway, who survives him, and besides her, he leaves to mourn his departure three brothers, L. Langland, England, Europe; Lars Langland, Sioux City, Iowa; G. A. Langland, Brewster, Minn., and also two sisters, Mrs. Martin Anderson, Story City and Mrs. Jacob Birkeland, Sioux City, Iowa.

He was buried December 15 from the Immanuel church. The pastor used for his text I John 3:2, "Beloved, now are we the sons of God and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; But we know that when He shall appear, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is."
