Services Here for Former Resident

Funeral rites for Orrin J. Newman of Des Moines were held on Tuesday afternoon, Mar. 16 at Riis Funeral Home. The Rev. Delmar Carlson of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Madrid was in charge of the service.

Robert Weeks was the soloist and Mrs. Lowell Accola was the organist.

Pallbearers were Warren Auestad, A. Doyle Auestad, Oliver Newman, Phil Rood, Shelby Chader and George Laycock.

Interment was in Hillsdale Cemetery, east of Madrid.

Obituary

Orrin Jesner Newman was born on Sept. 6, 1902, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Newman in Slater and passed away on Mar. 12, 1971 at University Hospitals in Iowa City at the age of 68 years. Death came after a period of illness.

Mr. Newman grew up in the Slater area. He was baptized in St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He later attended high school here until his family moved to the farm west of Slater.

As a young man he worked for several years at the Roy Koncher Market in Madrid. Later he managed the Slater Cold Storage Locker. He enlisted in the army in World War II. Following his military discharge he was employed at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. He acquired an apartment building in Des Moines where he lived.

Mr. Newman was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters: Della Auestad, Charlotte C. Walker, Wilma Johnson and Irene Engstrom.

Remaining to mourn his passing is his sister, Mrs. Elmer Soderlund of Madrid; a brother, Carroll P. Newman of Oskaloosa; sever nieces and nephews; and Miss Frieda Rehder, his homemaker.

He will be remembered as an unusually thoughtful friend and relative who never spared himself for others.
