Services Held for Mary Papich, 72

The funeral mass for Mary E. Papich of Slater was held at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid on Thursday, May 26 at 10 a.m. Reverend John F. Cain was the officiating minister. The Rosary was recited Wednesday evening, May 25 at 8 p.m. at Riis Funeral Home.

St. Malachy's Church Choir sang during the Mass and Mrs. Dean Lester was organist.

Pallbearers were Fred Blaskovich, Rodney Sutter, Harold Ersland, King Schaudt, Francis Nervig, Sr. and Donald Nervig.

Interment was in Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Kocur was born June 21, 1904 at Buxton, Monroe County, Iowa, to parents George and Ana Sisak Kocur.

Her father was killed in a mine accident when she was 11 years old, and son, in an attempt to help her family, she sold candy and worked in the office of the mine company store at Buxton. At the age of 17 she worked as a cashier and deputy postmistress at the company store in Onelock, Ia.

Mary married Milo Joseph Papich Apr. 7, 1923 at the Catholic Church in Lovilia, Ia. Shortly after this marriage, her mother died and she and Milo took into their home her young brothers, George and Frank Kocur.

One son, Marion was born to them Feb. 28, 1929 at Slater, Ia. She lived in the Slater and Madrid areas for over 50 years. She was a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church, St. Malachy's Altar and Rosary Society and the Slater American Legion Auxiliary.

She passed away at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines on Monday morning, May 23 at the age of 72 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George D. Kocur in 1965.

She is survived by her husband, Milo; one son, Marion; one brother, Frank Kocur of Knoxville, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Michael and Julie.
