Fatal Accident Near Cambridge
Thomas Craig Hilgenberg, 23, of Huxley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Hilgenberg of Cambridge, was fatally injured in a one-car accident just west of the junction of Highways 210 and 211, south of Cambridge, about 4 p.m. Monday.
Mr. Hilgenberg and his two passengers, Barbara Ann Schaudt, 19, of Slater and Kreg Lee Kahler, 21, of Cambridge, were taken to Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. Miss Schaudt and Mr. Kahler were treated there and released. Mr. Hilgenberg, who never regained consciousness, was transferred to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, where he died shortly after midnight.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 1 at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cambridge with burial in the Cambridge Cemetery.
Obituary
Thomas Craig Hilgenberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Hilgenberg, was born of May 24, 1949 at Jefferson, Ia. He was baptized in the Methodist Church and grew to manhood in Cambridge where he moved, together with his family, in 1954.
In 1968 he graduated from Ballard Community High School at Huxley.
He entered military service on Feb. 16, 1970 and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was discharged from the services of his country in February of this year.
On Monday, May 29, 1972, he was fatally injured in an auto accident, taken to Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, then transferred to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines where he passed away early Tuesday morning, May 30.
He was preceded in death by his mother in 1966.
He is survived by his father and step-mother; five brothers: Lennis, Mike, David, Steve and Denny; six sisters: Janice (Mrs. Alvin Larson), Kay (Mrs. Brian Ward), Karen (Mrs. Leon Richardson), Karla, Shawn and Lisa; and grandmother, Mrs. Elsie Clipperton of Bayard.
