Held Funeral Services at Palestine Church for Sampson Barnes

Slater, April 2 -- Funeral services for Sampson Barnes, 68, were held Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home south of Huxley and at 2 o'clock at the Palestine church near Cambridge.

Rev. Hiram Jacobson, his pastor, had charge of the services.

The many beautiful floral offerings were arranged by Mrs. Olem Tesdell and Mrs. Willie Richardson. Gifts of money from relatives and friends were presented to the missions in his memory.

A quartette composed of Walter Christopher, Mrs. Hiram Jacobson, Gladys Rullestad and Burton Tesdahl sang "Does Jesus Care," "In the Garden" and "Jesus Is Tenderly Calling." The pallbearers were Howard Mason of Slater, Sherman Mason of Des Moines, Joe and Gerhard Lande of Huxley and Pete and George Barnes of Alleman. Burial was made in the Fjeldberg cemetery near Huxley.

Sampson Barnes was born Dec. 19, 1872, at the Barnes homestead in Polk county, and died at his home near Alleman Thursday evening, March 27, 1941. His parents were Haldor and Anna Barnes. He was baptized and confirmed in the Palestine church. His marriage to Miss Jurgena Mason took place Feb. 25, 1903. Six children were born to this union, one daughter, Esther, died when a child.

They made their home on a farm near Alleman, where they have since resided.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Miss Nora Barnes of Des Moines, and four sons Arthur Barnes of St. Paul, Palmer Barnes in the U. S. Navy at Charleston, W. Va., Gilmore Barnes and Grant Barnes at home, also one sister, Mrs. Carrie Serdal of Derando, Wis.

Among those from Slater who attended the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Peter Apland, Mr. and Mrs. Will Van Gundy, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Roznos, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Alleman, Mrs. A. L. Peterson, Joe Houge, Edna Houge, Mrs. Severt Tesdell, Mrs. C. R. Sydness, Ben Hokel and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Mason.
