OBITUARY
J.H. Overland Dies After Long Illness

Joseph H. Overland, 57, of 1317 North Douty street, widely known livestock auctioneer, died in a hospital here at 7:30 a. m. today following a long illness.

He was a native of Iowa and a resident of California for thirty-one years, making his home here for the past twenty-four. He was a member of the Hanford Elks lodge and the Sheriff's Posse.

Overland was recognized as one of the most prominent and successful auctioneers of livestock in California. He established his sales yard east of Hanford in 1918, developing it to a forty acre plant with 36,000 feet under shelter.

Here he conducted auctions once a week and presided over private sales in other parts of the valley. In recent years total sales have run as high as $1,000,00 annually, about half representing the Hanford business and the balance on farms.

His success was attributed not to any luck or to any unusual breaks but to the close attention which he gave to it.

Overland was born in 1886 in Story County, Iowa, the son of Oliver and Dena Overland. After leaving school he was a timber and fuel inspector for a railroad in the East for about five years. He then went to Alaska, where he followed mining for several years.

Returning south, he located in Los Angeles, where he was in the cattle business for some years prior to moving to Hanford.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Edith Overland, two sons, Jack W., who in in the Navy and stationed at Pearl Harbor; Ted G., who in in an Army medical detachment at Demming, N. M.; to daughters, Mrs. Barbara Johnson of Porterville, and Mrs. Vivian Hyde of Santa Monica; one brother, Ben Overland of Hanford, and two sisters, Mrs. Leva Johnston and Mrs. Anna G. Gfeller, both of Los Angeles.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the People's Undertaking Parlors pending word from Jack Overland, who expects to come from Pearl Harbor.
