LARGE CROWD AT MARKUS (sic) FUNERAL

The funeral of Ole Markhu, whose death was mentioned in last weeks paper, took place from the Palestine church last Friday afternoon, the services being in charge of his pastor, Rev. Bueland. A large crowd was in attendance and the church was crowded. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery. Mr. Markhus had been failing for some time and critically sick for several weeks prior to his death. He was the victim of a complication of diseases, chief of which was a gangrene which started in his feet and was the immediate cause of his death.

Deceased reached an age of over seventy-four years. Many of these had been spent in the land of his birth, Norway, where he grew up. Later the call to go to America became too strong to be resisted and he bade his native land good-bye and emigrated to the United States and took up his residence near Newark, Illinois. After a few years residence there he came to Iowa and bought a farm in Polk county. While residing there his wife was called by death. Later he returned to his native country for a visit. He was married a second time. He continued to make the farm his home till a few years ago when he moved to Huxley where he resided at the time of his death. He was the father of seven children. Of these four survive him. They are daughters Sarah, Julia, Anna and Lena.* He is also survived by his second wife and three brothers, Elia of near Kanawha, Oscar of Newark, Illinois, and John who resides in Norway.

Mr. Markhus was a member of the Palestine church where he took part in all church affairs and assisted in advancing the work which was for the betterment of all. He Had a host of warm friends and many came from a distance to attend his funeral.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: In the estate of Ole C. Markhus, he lists as heirs: his wife, Guri Markhus and daughters, Sarah Tegland, Julia Wolfe, Lena Fjelland and Anna Markhus.
