Funeral Services Held at Slater for Joe E. Houge
Slater, March 15--Funeral services for Joseph E. Houge, were held Friday afternoon at 4:30 at the home, where a brief prayer service was held and 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem Lutheran church. The services were in charge of Rev. P. E. Onstad. The beautiful floral offerings were arranged by Mrs. Obed Johnson and Mrs. Roland Swanson.
Rev. and Mrs. H. E. Jacobson of Huxley sang a duet, "The Pearly White City," and Mrs. M. S. Heggen and Mrs. A. L. Peterson sang a duet, "My Faith Looks Up to Thee."
The pallbearers were members of the town council and were Carroll Tweedt, A. J. Reinertson, Nels Sabo, Roy Cole, M. T. Nervig and Sanford Floden. Gifts of money to the missions were given in memory of Mr. Houge.
Burial was made in the Palestine cemetery by the side of his wife.
Joseph E. Houge was born in Palestine township near Huxley, September 6, 1865 and died at his home in Slater, March 6, 1944 at the age of 78 years and 6 months. His parents were Ike and Valborg Houge. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His marriage to Julia Severeid took place March 14, 1907. Three children blessed this union. They made their home on a farm for several years after which they moved to Slater. Mr. Houge always took an active part in the affairs of the church and community. At the time of his death he was serving as town marshal. At various times he had served in other positions as councilman and mayor. He was a devoted husband and father. His wife passed away several years ago.
He is survived by twin daughters, Mrs. Glen Covey of Charles City and Miss Edna Houge of Slater, one son Jeffrey Houge of Huxley and 3 grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mary Christopher of Jackson, Minn.; two brothers, Anfin Houge of McCloud, N. D., and George Houge of Slater and a large number of relatives and friends.
Among the relatives from a distance, who were present at the services were Mr. and Mrs. Glen Covey of Charles City; Mrs. Mary Christopher, Orrin Christopher and Mrs. Clarence Sime of Jackson, Minn.; Mrs. Helen Bates, Miss Elizabeth Maland, Mrs. Helmar Dahl, Mrs. Andrew Dahl and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Erickson of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stenson, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Shold, Mrs. Malcolm Larson and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Eggland of Roland; Mrs. Don Clemons of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Anderson of Maxwell, Mrs. Bernie Klongland of Zearing and Mrs. Burton Halverson of Nevada.
