Last Rites Held for Mrs. George Floden
The Slater community was shocked and saddened as word spread Monday morning that a two-car accident had taken the life of Mrs. George Floden on Sunday night Aug. 4.
The crash occurred about 2 1/2 miles west of Alleman. The Flodens were en route to Veterans Hospital in Des Moines to take George Floden back to the hospital where he is a patient. He had been home on a weekend leave from the hospital. Other passengers in the car were their sons, Philip and Roger, driver of the car, and Mr. Floden's brother Richard of Ames. They were also injured and taken to Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Roger, 20, received facial cuts and chest bruises. He was released from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. George, 61, received facial and head cuts. His brother, Richard, 71, has a fractured hip and chest injuries and remains hospitalized. The younger son, Philip, 10, was released the same night.
The occupant of the other car, Duane Jamison of Polk City was also taken to the Iowa Lutheran Hospital. His injuries were not serious and he was released on Monday afternoon.
Funeral Services
Funeral services for Mrs. George Floden were held Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Rev. W. A. Adix was in charge. His sermon text was "With Jesus Victorious," based on Matthew 14: 24-33.
The congregation sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and Mrs. Lester Becker sang "How Great Thou Art." Mrs. Oliver Newman was the organist.
Pallbearers were Elmer Richardson, Arnold Meyer, Wilbur Thornwall, Ralph Pirkey, Don Accola and Amund Ihle. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Wilbur Thornwall and Mrs. Jeffery Richardson.
Interment was in the Palestine Church Cemetery near Huxley.
Obituary
Mrs. Floden, the former Ruth Golay was born May 15, 1916 in the Huxley vicinity to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Golay. She attended the Slater and Huxley schools and was graduated from Huxley schools and was graduated from Huxley High School.
After her marriage to George Floden on May 2, 1945, they established their home in the Slater community.
A member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, she was active in the ALCW and was presently president of the Naomi Circle. For a number of years, she has been a regular and faithful Sunday School teacher in the primary department. She ill be remembered as a thoughtful, helpful friend.
In the Slater elementary school she has been helpful as a home room mother several years. Since last fall she was news correspondent for The Slater News and the Slater correspondent for the Nevada Evening Journal.
Surviving Mrs. Floden are her husband, George, two sons, Roger and Philip, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Roy Golay of Coon Rapids; brothers, Charles of Coon Rapids, James of Los Angeles, Calif., Bill of Perry, Paul and Robert of Des Moines; sisters, Elaine, Marilyn and Nancy of Coon Rapids, Marie of Collins and Mrs. Edna Doubleday of Ankeny, and many other relatives and friends.
