THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, September 13, 2005.

Robert Garland, 82, of Ames died at his home Friday, Sept. 9. His body has been cremated, and a memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Schroeder Memorial Chapel in Boone with the Rev. Terry Rassmussen officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone.

Bob was born Sept. 4, 1923, in Boone, the son of Dennis and Hazel (Brixey) Garland. Bob, as he is known to all, was a man who never met a stranger and was the first to help a friend. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1943. He married Marjorie Flynn July 12, 1945, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church near Gilbert. In earlier years, he was a salesman for the Montgomery Wards store in Ames, operated a gas station south of Huxley and the couple owned and operated the Lucky G restaurant in Ames. From 1969-85, he was employed as a maintenance man for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Ames working in Story County. He retired Sept. 4, 1985. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 644 of Ames. He was very mechanical and liked tinkering and inventing things. As he said about cars, "If you can't fix them, you shouldn't be driving them." He enjoyed traveling and camping, family events, playing cards, dancing with his wife, and in earlier years, he liked to hunt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Kathryn; an infant grandson, Christopher Michalicek; and three brothers, James, Lawrence and Dean.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Ames; three sons, Charles Garland and companion, Kelli Faidley, of Ames, Robert D. Garland and wife, LuAnn, of Hutchinson, Kan, and Sean Garland of Houston; two daughters, Linda Michalicek and husband, Steve, of Spring, Texas, and Leanne Beachler and husband, Richard, of Boone; one brother, Thomas Garland and wife, Vicki, of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Rosemary Sorenson Fleming of Boone; six grandchildren, Shannon Nyhan and husband, Chris, Megan Wilson and husband, Nathan, Aleda Beachler, Ian Beachler, Kathy Calara and husband, R.J., and Robert W. Garland and wife, Jennifer; two great grandsons, Connor Calara and Bobby Garland.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., and the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation continues from 8 a.m. to time of service time Wednesday. Memorials may be given to the family to be used at its discretion.
