OBITUARY OF JOHN JOHNSON

Was One of the Finest Men Who Ever Set Foot in Slater.

John Johnson, whose remains were brought from Des Moines last Friday and buried from the local M. E. church on the same day, was born at Smoland, Sweden, February 16, 1840. He grew to manhood in the land of his birth where he was also united in marriage to Miss Mathilda Carlson, a fine young woman of his immediate vicinity. Two years later they came to America, taking up their residence at Rockford, Illinois, where they continued to live until they moved to Fairfield, Iowa. After a short time they moved to Story county and took up their residence at Sheldahl. He later resided at Slater where he conducted a furniture store and did some cabinet work. He then moved to Des Moines where he made his home for many years and continued to reside until death came to claim him last week, Monday, the 10th, at the Lutheran hospital where he had been operated upon. His wife had passed away in June, 1881. He was the father of seven children of whom only one survives, Mrs. Minnie Wald, wife of Attorney Wald. He is also mourned by seven grand children and a host of warm friends.

Deceased was known to many of our local people who will remember him as one of the finest of men. No matter what was the matter, success or failure, joy or sorrow--he was always the same and always remained such. Though of an advanced age, over 77 years he was always hale and hearty and worked every day until sickness overtook him.
