George Nelson Whipple
George Nelson Whipple was born in Albion, Michigan, June 10, 1852, being at the time of his death on July 10th, 68 years and one month of age. Leaving Albion in early childhood, the family located at Galva, Illinois, where Mr. Whipple spent his young manhood, graduating from the Galva high school in 1869. Entering Knox college at Galesburg, same state, the following year, he finishing his schooling there, graduating from the institution in 1874, receiving the degree of bachelor of arts.
On May 13, 1875, he was united in marriage to Miss Eva Floretta Warner of Galesburg, Illinois. To this union were born four children, Mrs. Bessie May Rawson, deceased, of Pocatello, Idaho; George Henry Whipple of Minneapolis; Mrs. Louise Keelor of Gilmore City, Iowa, and Fred Warner Whipple of Lake Mills, Iowa. The three survive him and were in attendance at the funeral Monday.
Shortly after having finished his school work, Mr. Whipple took up railroad work at Mendota, Illinois, then transferring in order to Oneida, Farmington and Monmouth, same state, coming to Iowa in September, 1890, taking up his residence at Slater, where he continued to reside till death called him.
In the early part of 1915 he gave up his work at the depot at Slater and after nearly twenty-five years of continuous service, since which time he has worked or played as he saw fit, about the old town which he always called home.
On August 10, 1904, Mrs. Whipple departed this life, her remains being buried at Marshalltown, Iowa. On August 24, 1907, he was again united in marriage, this time to Deaconess Pauline Weidense of Minneapolis, the ceremony taking place in Chicago.
Mr. Whipple is survived by his second wife, the three children mentioned above, two granddaughters, one sister, Mrs. H. B. Bergen of Slater; one brother, Rev. C. J. Whipple, D. D., of Luzerne, New York, and other more distant relatives and a large circle of friends.
He was a life member of the Episcopal church, but during his residence in Slater was interested in the Bethlehem church and of late years had been a member of the Sunday school of that church. He was some time ago appointed teacher of the adult Bible class of that school and was its faithful teacher until a few weeks ago, when ill health forced him to give up the work of which he was so very fond and in which he took such great interest. In his death the school lost one of its most earnest and most faithful workers and he will be greatly missed.
His funeral from the Bethlehem church on Monday afternoon was attended by a large crowd. Rev. Duea had charge of the services and the remains were laid to rest in the Slater cemetery.
