Stanley Durward Egland, 81, of Ames, died Thursday, Sept. 1, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, with the Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Due to the renovation of the First United Methodist Church, services will be at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St., Nevada. Burial will be in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
Stan was born Nov. 29, 1923, in Jewell, to Casper and Anna (Olson) Egland. He was a 1941 graduate of Milford Township School. He married Joan A. (Hill) Praty Aug. 12, 1956, at Salem Lutheran Church in Roland. They farmed until they retired in 1986. They moved to Ames in 1994.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Nevada, the 10 o'clock coffee group and the Ames Golden K Club. He served on many boards: a 4-H leader for Richland-Midstate, Story County 4-H Fair swine superintendent for 12 years; Farm Bureau secretary; president of Pork Producers; First United Methodist Church board; Roland-Nevada Co-op president for 11 years; Nevada Lions Club member and officer. He also served on the Stone Brooke Board where he lived. He was an avid Cyclone sports fan. He loved bowling, playing bridge and spending time with family and friends. He participated in the Senior Iowa Games as a bowling finalist several years.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joan of Ames; two sons, Steve (Myra) Prati and Neal (Jill) Prati; three daughters, Tonnee (Dennis) Wilkening, Cindy (Dennie) Anderson and Nancy Wirth; three brothers, Glen Egland of Story City, Vernon (Marilyn) Egland of Bettendorf and Frank (Barb) Egland of Battle Creek, Michigan; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren: Amie Wilkening, Stacie (Kevin) Fleming, Marcie Wilkening, Ryan Wilkening, Tiphani (Jeff) Krueger, Julianne and Jack, Jayme Prati, Sarah Griner, Josh Anderson, Stephanie, Jessica and Austin Wirth, Nicki Prati, Kristina (Jim) Nimblett, Amilia and Celena.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Janice Leeper in 1955.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada.
Memorials may be directed to Homeward Hospice of Ames, American Cancer Society, or the First United Methodist Church in Nevada.
