"Obituary of Sam J. Nelson

Funeral services for Sam J. Nelson were held Saturday, November 10, at 2 p.m., in Bergen Lutheran Church. Pastor Howard M. Lybeck officiated.

Mr. Nelson was born December 31, 1878, at Roland, the son of Nels and Anna Nelson. He graduated from Drake University Law College, where he was a member of the varsity football team. He never actively practiced law, but farmed in the Roland and McCallsburg communities for 21 years.

On February 19, 1913, Mr. Nelson was united in marriage to Katherine Coffee. To this union were born two daughters, Ann Elizabeth, who died in infancy, and Josephine (Mrs. Lowell Iverson) of Rockwell City; and four sons, Samuel J. of Gross Pointe, Mich., David of Barrington, Ill., Daniel of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and William of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; one brother, John, and two sisters, Carrie and Celia, of Roland.

Mr. Nelson became secretary of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Central Iowa, and moved from the farm to Roland. He held this position for 21 years, until retiring seven years ago. He was active in all civic affairs, and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Roland. He was very interested in school affair, and served on the Roland Board of Education for several years.

Music at the services was provide by the Ladies Triple, accompanied by Mrs. Otto J. Hanson at the organ. Pallbearers were Richard Christian, Benj. Anderson, Kermit Molde, Aaron Braathun, LeRoy F. Higgins, and Ray Kiletofte. Burial was in the Roland cemetery."
