Bates Funeral Was Held Tuesday

The funeral for the late Elnathan Bates was held from the home Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, under the direction of his pastor, Rev. E. A. Ramige of the Evangelical church. The sermon was preached by Rev. Charles Pickford of Hubbard, former pastor at Summit and a personal friend of the deceased. Interment was in the Nevada cemetery.

The funeral was largely attended by old Time neighbors and friends. In the passing of Mr. Bates the community has lost a substantial citizen, a man respected for his strict honesty and integrity and one whose life will be long remembered with honor and respect.

Obituary of Mr. Bates

Elnathan Bates was born in Williams county, Ohio, April 17, 1853 and died at his home in Nevada, corner of Tenth and Avenue Feb. 23, 1924, aged 70 years, 10 months and 6 days.

With his parents he removed to Story county, Iowa, in his youth, settling on a farm in Nevada township where he resided over forty years until his removal to his home in Nevada in March 1913. He was married to Miss Margaret Miller on March 27, 1872 in the old home in Nevada township, where they resided until 11 years since. To this union was born four children, all of whom together with his wife survive his decease. They are Mrs. Ada May Whitaker of Nevada township, Mrs. Della Robinson of Rolfe, Iowa, Leland Bates living near Nevada, and Eland Bates of Ames. He leaves seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

On March 27, 1922, they were permitted to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary at which time their children and grandchildren were all present.

Mr. Bates became a christian in early life and was one of the charter members of the Summit Evangelical church, retaining his membership there until his death. He was interested in the work and progress of the church and held positions of trust and service in the Summit church during the greater part of that time.

His illness dated back to last May since which time he had been in failing health. About two weeks ago he went to Rochester, Minn., in hopes of finding relief but failed to do so returning home to be with his family when the end came.

The sympathy of many friends will be with the family in the loss they have thus sustained.
