Funeral Services for Pioneer Business Man
Special to the Journal.
Slater, Feb. 1--Funeral services for A. A. Lande were held Friday afternoon at the Riis Funeral home at two o'clock and 2:30 p. m. at the Bethlehem church. The services were in charge of his pastor, Rev. E. R. Rorem. The floral offerings were unusually beautiful and numerous and paid silent tribute to the departed friend. Mrs. C. A. Larson and Mrs. A. J. Reinertson had charge of the flowers.The pallbearers were: E. C. Rood, Chas. Skortman, Tom Osem, A. L. Peterson, Andrew Maland and Will Van Gundy. Interment was made in the Slater cemetery.
Among those from out of town in attendance at the services were Miss Carrie Lande of Milroy, Minnesota; Guy Lamb and Mr. Linebaugh of Boone; Harry Langland of Nevada; Ole Langland of Cambridge; Misses Emma and Rebekah Johnson, Martha Parkin and Carrie Viland, Mrs. Laura Kyle, Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Larson, W. H. Doggett, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Smith and Mabel McKarahan, all of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Jay, John Arnold, Jessie Powell, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Cottrell; Mrs. A. D. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Penney, Mr. and Mrs. Walt Weeks, W. D. Blythe, Russell Lake and Mrs. Anna Shane, all from Ames.
Amos A. Lande was born near Bergen, Norway on January 10, 1866. He was the youngest of nine children, all of whom together with the parents, have preceded him in death. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1866 an located in Polk county remaining until 1869 when they moved to Story county.
After receiving his early training in the public schools he attended the Iowa Business college at Des Moines. When about sixteen years of age he attended the Iowa College of Pharmacy, later connected with Drake university.
He located at Sheldahl in 1886 and moved from there to Slater in 1887 when the town was started, having been a resident of, and in the drug business in Slater for 50 years.
On October 25, 1888, he was married to Betsy S. Hill, who passed away April 18, 1935. Four children survive: Marie of Des Moines, Alma and Sanford of Ames, and Clayton of Slater, together with three grandchildren.
Since August 1934, he spent seven months of that time in the hospital with every effort to regain his former health. During the last year, however, he gradually lost in strength until death took place at 11:30, Tuesday, January 26, 1937, at the age of 71 years and 16 days.
He was confirmed in the Fieldberg church in 1880 of which congregation he was a member, until he moved to Slater when his membership was transferred to the Bethlehem church, of which he was a member at the time of his death.
He was active in all civic enterprises, being at different times mayor, member of the school board for 27 years, city council and the Commercial club. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. and Rebekah lodge.
