Held Services for John Tummel

Special to the Journal.
Colo, Feb. 10--Funeral services for John Wesley Tummel were held Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 2 p. m. from the Methodist Episcopal church at Colo. Rev. Steffenson performed the last rites in the presence of many relatives and friends. A ladies quartet composed of Miss Zola Carver, Mrs. S. B. Goodenow, Mrs. Lloyd Lounsbury and Mrs. Steffenson sang "Lead Kindly Light" and "Abide With Me." Mrs Steffenson sang "My Task."

Those attending the service from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Tummel and son Dean of Dubuque, Mrs. Willard H. Parry, Miami, Fla., Mr. and Mrs. Milo Hall of Collins, Mrs. Pauline Watson of State Center, Mrs. Robt. L. Train, Independence, Mo., Mrs. C. G. Buck, Miss Colene Byers and Dr. H. G. Buck of Ames, H. W. Bacon, Hazelton, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Watson Jr., Mr. and Mrs. James Allison, Mrs. Orville Smith, Mrs. Will Whitehill, Mrs. Rolly Richeson, Mr. and Mrs. George German, Mrs. R. E. Gray, A. H. Hilleman, F. G. Bagge Eckhart all of State Center, Chas. Hall and Oscar Hall of Nevada and Bert Corey of Marshalltown.

John Wesley Tummel, son of Frederick William and Eliza Fechtly [should be Fegtly] Tummel was born May 7, 1861 at Sandwich, Illinois and passed away suddenly at his home in Colo on Saturday evening, Jan. 30, 1937 at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 23 days. When he was a lad of four years, he moved with his parents from Illinois to State Center, Iowa, where he spent most of his life. Attending the State Center public school and high school. Later he graduated from a business training from Bryant and Stratton business college in Chicago. He was about to enter business in Chicago, but he followed his father's wishes and returned to State Center where at the age of 18 he entered the clothing business with his brother, William Frederick, as a partner.

On Christmas day 1895 he was united in marriage to Mary G. Byers. To them were born three children Arnold Wesley of Dubuque, Mildred Parry of Miami, Fla., and Eleanor Hall of Collins. Mr. and Mrs. Tummel settled in Colo in March 1931 where they have made their home since. Mr. Tummel had been an active member of the Methodist church for over 36 years. He believed in expressing his religion in the type of life that he lived. As a father, husband and neighbor, his kindliness and helpfulness has made an impeachable testimony unto his Christian character. Also lest for mourn his passing are his sister Mrs. Pauline Watson of State Center, a brother William F. Tummel of Kansas City. One sister Mrs. Emma Sibley, preceded him in death. He leaves also three grandchildren, Jeanne Marie Parry of Miami, Arnold Dean Tummel of Dubuque and Patricia Jane Hall of Collins, besides a host of friends who knew and loved him.
