Funeral Services Held For Benherd J. Solyst

Funeral services were conducted for Benherd J. Solyst on Monday, July 5, 1954, from the Erickson Funeral home and the Bergen Lutheran church. Officiating was Rev. Olaf Holen, in the absence of Rev. Allen E. Nelson.

Don H. Boyd sang a solo at the church.

Casket bearers were: Archie Solyst, Jay Solyst, Donald Solyst, Floyd Erickson, Jesse Solyst, and Orville Brekke.

Burial was in the Roland cemetery.

Obituary

Benherd J. Solyst was born at Stavanger, Norway, on June 1, 1879, and died at his home at Roland on Friday, June 25, 1954, at the age of 75 years and 24 days.

At the age of three, he came to America with his parents and they settled on a farm near McCallsburg, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. He attended Jewell Lutheran college, and afterwards was employed by E. O. Dillin as clerk and from there was promoted to Garden City as manager of Dillin's Department Store. He was married to Tella Nelson of Roland.

Later they moved to Roland where Mr. Solyst entered the real estate and mercantile business. For the past nine years, he spent much of his time in Des Moines.

Surviving are his wife, Tella; one son, Reuben of Roland; and five daughters, Florence Solyst and Mattie Bomberger of La Jolla, Calif., Elaine (Mrs. Loyd Smith) of Des Moines, Bernice (Mrs. Arnold Newton) of Elburn, Ill., and Julia (Mrs. Bill Christy) of Nevada.

He also leaves 15 grandchildren, three brothers, John of Forest City, Otto of Austin, Minn., and Olaf of McCallsburg, and one sister Mrs. L. G. Nelson of Garden City, and a number of nieces and nephews.

His father, Ole, and mother Sophia, brother Mandus, and sister Alma Erickson, and a grandson, Dwayne Solyst, preceded him in death.
