OBITUARY
MRS. CHRISTINE ROE
Mrs. Christine Roe, a long time resident of Howard township, died Saturday last at the home which she had in recent years occupied in Story City, at the ripe old age of 86 years, 9 months and 15 days. She was born near Bergen, Norway, April 5, 1830, grew up and was married there about 1853 to O. S. Roe, and continued to live there in the earlier years of their married life. In 1862, however, they emigrated to this country making their their first settlement near Calamus, Clinton county, Iowa, but removing in 1868 to Story county an locating permanently near Roland in the southeast portion of Howard township. There they lived and prospered and reared their numerous family, and there Mr. Roe died in 1896. Some dozen years ago she removed to Story City, accompanied by her unmarried daughter, Miss Anna Roe, and there she spent her remaining years.
Mrs. Roe was one of the mothers such as have done so very much toward the founding and up-building the state. She had ten children, of whom five survive, the best known being Hon. Ole O. Roe, for ten years county superintendent and now fire-marshall of the state. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
