Military Funeral for Jesse Sheler, World War Veteran

Maxwell, Nov. 18--A military funeral and burial rites were accorded Jesse S. Sheler, 39, a World war veteran of near Farrar, who died Monday, as a result of an accidental shooting.

The services were held Wednesday at the Saints church in Runnells, with Rev. Fey of Farrar in charge. Burial was in the cemetery at Lowman.

Services were conducted at the grave by Post No. 738 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Des Moines. The officiating firing squad consisted of 12 men from Fort Des Moines army post.

The sermon was preached by Rev. H. B. Fay of Farrar; the song "Goodnight Here; Good-morning There," was sung by a trio of Runnells friends. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. H. B. Fay and Mrs. Boyd Martin an the pallbearers were John Klink, Martin Phelan, Dan Peters, Thomas Sparks, Ray Martin and A. F. Henrich, all members of the Maxwell Post American Legion.

The church was filled with old neighbors and friends.

The following sketch of the life of the deceased was read during the service.

Jesse S. Sheler, son of John and Jenny Sheler, was born at Pleasantville, November 20, 1900. At the age of 5 years he moved with his parents to Runnells, Polk county, where he grew to manhood.

In May, 1918, he joined the United States army, serving with the 141st infantry, 36th division, spending most of his time in active service in France, an later with the Army of Occupation in Germany, arriving home June 1919. He participated in the Meuse, Argonne, Marne and Champaine engagements.

On March 3, 1921, he was united in marriage to Maude Bivans. To this union were born 5 children: Jenny, Betty, Jack, James and Robert.

He was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 738 of Des Moines, holding membership there continuously; also a member of Maxwell Post 249 of the American Legion.

He depart this life November 13, 1939 at the age of 38 years, 11 months and 24 days. He is survived by his aged mother, one brother, 6 sisters, wife, 5 children, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and comrades.
