Mack Deal Met Tragic Death in Highway Accident

Zearing, June 30--Mack Deal, 78, long time resident of this community, died at St. Thomas hospital in Marshalltown early Sunday morning as a result of injuries sustained Saturday night about 10 o'clock when struck by an automobile driven by Floyd Conklin of near State Center, while walking along the highway from the Ruxton filling station on No. 65, into Zearing.

Deal was on his way her from Des Moines where he had been visiting and had left the bus at the Ruxton station and was on his way to the home of his sister, Mrs. Rachel Springer. He was walking on the right side of the highway and Conklin, also east bound, blinded by the light of an oncoming car, did not see the pedestrian until too late to avoid striking him.

Conklin at once summoned help and the injured man was hurried in an ambulance to Marshalltown but his injuries were fatal and he passed away Sunday morning.

While no definite funeral arrangements have been made it is thought that the services will probably be held at the Brouhard funeral home on Wednesday or Thursday and the remains taken to Oakland, Calif., for burial beside his wife, who died there a year ago.

Elias McClallan Deal, formally known as "Mack", a son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Deal, was born in Ohio, June 12, 1863, but came to Iowa with his parents when a child of two years. The family, consisting of the parents and 10 children, located near Clemons and he had been a resident of this community nearly his entire lifetime. Of the 10 children, the only ones left are the brother, C. M. Deal of Des Moines and sisters, Mrs. Clara Irvine of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Rachel Springer of Zearing.

He was married to Amelia Thornton, March 13, 1889. She died Nov. 12, 1940, at Oakland, Cal. They leave two children, Don of Trenton, N.J., and Mrs. Debenshire of Oakland, Cal., and three grandchildren.

Since the death of his wife he had had no established home, but had just returned from New Jersey where he had visited his son and from there to Des Moines to visit his brother, C. M. Deal. The fatal accident occurred while on his way back to Zearing for an over the holiday visit at the home of his sister, Mrs. Springer.

The daughter is on her way here from California but so far thy have been unable to contact the son in Trenton.
