Funeral Services at Slater for T. Thompson

Special to the Journal:
Slater, March 9--Funeral services for Tom L. Thompson were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home and 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem church. The services were in charge of Rev. E. R. Rorem.

Many beautiful floral offerings covered the casket. A number of gifts to the missions were given in his memory. The pall bearers were nephews: Stanley Thompson of McCallsburg, Robert Thompson, James Thompson, Milford Thompson, Myron Thompson and Leonard Thompson.

Two selections "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Let the Lower Lights Be Burning" were sung by the Riis quartette. A vocal duet, "Under His Wings" was sung by Miss June and Dorothy Weeks.

T. L. Thompson was born in Polk county, August 17, 1875 and died Thursday March 2, 1939, at the age of 63 years, 6 months and 15 days. His parents were Lars and Julia Thompson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His marriage to Bertha Thompson took place March 10, 1909. Seven children were born to this union. They made their home on a farm southeast of Slater for a number of years moving later to a farm near Polk City. The family was members of the Bethlehem congregation. Several years ago he had a serious illness from which he did not entirely recover.

His sudden death from a heart attack occurred in his yard as he was watching the boys shovel snow. He was a very modest and unassuming man and had a large circle of friends. He was a kind father and husband.

He is survived by his wife and the following children Mrs. Charles Bennett, Mrs. Bert Arringdale and Mrs. George Wideen of Boone; Mrs. Robert Miller, Joseph, Arthur and Dorothy Thompson. Three step children, Mrs. Tommy Thompson and Ralph Kiltner of Ames and Ole Hansen of Huxley. Two sisters Mrs. Ellen Mickelson of near Huxley and Mrs. Mary Gaard of Washington. Fifteen grandchildren also survive.
