Last Rites for Asa McConnell Held Friday

Funeral services for Asa McConnell, long time residents of Nevada and Story County, who passed away in his home Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 5:15 P. M., were held Friday, Aug. 8, at 10 o'clock in the Morfoot Funeral home with the Rev. Roy L. Palmerton officiating. Those assisting as pall-bearers were Frank Purk, Lester Corbin, Clarence Hoistma, Clark Elwell, Robert Campbell and Lawrence Toms.

The parlors were filled to capacity and many were the floral contributions, showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held among his friends and all those who knew him.

Mr. McConnell had been in poor health for a number of years. Thirty-two months ago he suffered a severe stroke, becoming an invalid, and being bedfast from that time on until his death Wednesday, Aug. 6.

Asa McConnell was born June 14, 1872 in Peoria, Iowa, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex McConnell. Here he lived with his parents on a farm until he entered manhood. Passing away Aug. 6 at the age of 75 years, 1 month, 23 days. He was married at Maxwell, Iowa, to Miss Anna Faidley of Maxwell. He with his wife and family came to Nevada in 1911, thirty six years ago. He was employed at that time by the firm of Dunkelbarger and King, having hauled the first load of lumber to be used in the construction of the Alderman building. For eight years he was a janitor at the old High school-Grade building, later he and Mrs. McConnell owned and operated a Tea room for several years, giving that up when his health became impaired.

Eight children were born to Asa and Anna McConnell, one of which died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his death, besides his wife, Anna, seven children, Mrs. Ruth Kirkendall, Nevada; Mrs. Mabel Lee, Algona; Glenn of Nevada; Mrs. Helen Parish, Chicago; Fred, of Nevada; Maurice now in Hawaii and Betty at Woodward. Fifteen grand-children and twelve great grand-children survive.

Anderson, Ames; Mrs. Anna Horseman, Mr. and Mrs. Ora Mullen, Mrs. Marian DeMoss, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Foster, all of Des Moines; Mrs. Elba Alverson, Mrs. Harley Minear, Maxwell; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Ballard, Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Peterson, Ames; and Mr. and Mrs. Don Morrow of Ottumwa.
