Last Rites for Mrs. Sarah Fields

Mrs. Sarah Fields, 76, widow of the late John Fields, a former resident of the Maxwell community, died on Monday, Jan. 13, at the Evangelical Deaconess hospital in Marshalltown where she had been a patient since Jan. 4. She had been in ill health since suffering a heart attack six years ago and in rapidly failing health the past three weeks. Mrs. Fields was born Sarah Hughes, May 15, 1870 at Cambridge, the daughter of Aaron and Mary Lucore Hughes.

She was reared in Cambridge and on March 17, 1888 was married at Nevada to John J. Fields. They established their home in Maxwell and lived in neighboring communities until 1918 when they moved to Marshalltown. Mr. Fields died there, May 7, 1937. At an early age she joined the Church of Christ at Maxwell and was a member of the Court of Honor lodge. She was preceded in death besides her husband by three sons, two daughters, two brothers and one grand daughter.

The last remaining member of the Hughes family, Mrs. Fields is survived by her family of two daughters and three sons, Mrs. Ollie Anderson, Ralph and Delbert of Marshalltown, Mrs. William Gummert of Quarry and Charles Fields of Searsboro, thirty grand children and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive her.

The funeral rites were held Thursday afternoon January 16th at the Estel funeral home in Marshalltown with the Rev. Orval E. Walker pastor of the Central Church of Christ officiating. Burial was made in the family lot at Riverside cemetery.
