Last Rites for S. S. Hanson Were Largely Attended
Funeral services for the late S. S. Hanson, 83, who passed away Monday afternoon at 5:10 at his home 805 Sixth street, were largely attended at the Ryan Funeral Home at 2 p. m. Thursday afternoon.
Reverend O. E. Cooley of the Nevada Methodist church officiated at the last rites, bringing a comforting message to the bereaved. Harry Christiansen of Boone was at the organ, playing arrangements of familiar hymns, including "Old Rugged Cross," "Abide With Me," "In the Garden," "Rock of Ages" and "Going Home" from the New World Symphony.
The bier was surrounded by many beautiful flowers which mutely testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held and were expressive of the sympathy felt for Mrs. Hanson and her family.
The pall bearers were Hans Hanson, Amos Hanson, Jr., James Hanson, Hollis Hanson, L. W. Mead and Clayton Hansen, nephews of the deceased.
Committal was in the Collins cemetery.
Born in Jasper County.
Samuel Seward Hanson was born in Jasper county, Iowa, September 25, 1864, a son of Hans and Mary Hanson and passed away January 13, 1947 at the age of 82 years, three months and 19 days. He was married at Collins to Minnie P. Mead June 17, 1894 and for a number of years lived in Collins where he was interested in farming and banking.
The family moved to Nevada January 10, 1916, thirty one years ago.
Mr. Hanson was one of the highly respected and substantial citizens of Story county. For several years he was a member of the Story county Board of Supervisors where his wise counsel and good business judgment made him a valuable public servant. During his incumbency in office Story county's fine County Home was built, a project in which he had taken great interest.
Surviving Mr. Hanson are his wife and seven children. His death is the first bread in the immediate circle. The children include the sons, Charles Hanson of Des Moines and Lester Hanson of Nevada. The daughters are Mabel, Mrs. Carl E. Stone of Nevada, Dorothy, Mrs. Newell Maritz of Ames, Mrs. Margaret Lomax of Des Moines, Mary, Mrs. Harold Upstill of Colo and Minnie, Mrs. Edw. Heintz of Nevada.
Also surviving are the following grandchildren: Marian Stone and Edward Stone of Nevada, Kathleen Hanson, Nevada, Robert Maritz, Ames, Billy Lomax, Nevada, Gene Upstill of Colo, and Ronnie, Helen, Arian, Sammie and Lois Ann Heintz of Nevada. A brother, Amos Hanson of Collins, also survives.
All the children and grandchildren, with the exception of Miss Marian Stone of Ann Arbor, Mich. were present with the mother and grandmother for the last rites.
Among the relatives from out of town in attendance at the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hanson, Mrs. Margaret Lomax, Hans Hanson, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Hanson, Jr., of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Newell Maritz, Robert Maritz and Mrs. Geraldine Roberg of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Upstill and son Gene of Colo, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Hanson, Sr., Mrs. Edna Hanson, Hollis Hanson, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hanson, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Kimberly and daughter Jean, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Mead, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sokol all of Collins.
In addition to relatives there were friends present from Ames, Maxwell, Collins, Colo, McCallsburg, and Boone.
