Mrs. Rachel Johnson Slater Pioneer Woman, is Dead

MRS. RACHEL JOHNSON

Slater, Nov. 9--Mrs. Rachel Johnson, 91, pioneer woman of Slater community, died at her winter apartment at 410 Franklin avenue, Des Moines, Saturday at 10 p. m., and funeral rites will be held at Hauge Lutheran church here Wednesday afternoon and burial will be in the family lot in the Slater cemetery.

The aged woman died of complications due to her extreme age.

Mrs. Johnson was one of the pioneer teachers of the southwestern part of the county, having taught at the Apland and Livingston schools as well as other schools of the county.

She is survived by five children, they being the daughters Emma and Rebecca of Des Moines, and sons Melvin of Webster City, Austin of Springfield, Mass., and Joseph and Cedar Rapids.

She was a distant relative of Elmer Warren, recently elected governor of California, who is a grandson of H. Warren, a former resident of the Slater community. The Warren family left here years ago, locating first in the Eagle Grove neighborhood.

[Administrator Note: The elected governor of California was Earl Warren - not Elmer as stated in the obituary.]
