NEAR CENTENARIAN STORY PIONEER DIED
SILAS McQUISTON DIED IN DES MOINES MONDAY AFTERNOON
Special to the Journal.
Collins, Oct. 6--Silas McQuiston, within a few months of a hundred years of age and a pioneer of this community died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Dollie Edwards, in Des Moines, late Monday afternoon.Funeral services will be held in Des Moines Wednesday morning, after which the funeral party will accompany the body to Collins, where interment will be made in the Collins cemetery at 2:00.
Mr. McQuiston was a native of Tuskerosco county, Indiana, where he was born March 4, 1832. He came to Iowa in an early day before the railroads had entered the state. Staying here for a time he returned to Indiana, but eventually came back to Iowa and settled near Collins and it was there that he was married to Susan Kester.
Their home continued near here and their large family of children were raised on a farm south of Collins.
Mrs. McQuiston died about 20 years ago. Since the death of his wife he has made his home with the children. Of the six children the only one dead is one daughter Mrs. Ella Holmes.
The others are Mrs. Julia Cunningham of Stuart, Mrs. Nancy Brown of Des Moines, Mrs. Emma Shelburg of Des Moines, Mrs. Dolly Edwards of Des Moines and Wesley McQuiston of near Collins.
