THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, July 6, 2005.

Orlin (O.J.) Joel Holland, 88, of Roland, died Tuesday, July 5, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at Salem Lutheran Church in Roland. Burial will be in Roland Cemetery.

Orlin Joel Holland was born Sept. 30, 1916, east of Roland to Ole and Millie (Jacobson). He was baptized and confirmed in Salem Lutheran Church. He graduated from Roland High School in 1935. He served in the U.S. Army from March 4, 1942, until Oct. 13, 1945. While overseas he served in Normandy, France and central Europe. After the service, he was a member of the Roland American Legion, Post 307 for 59 years. He married Margaret M. Hotger on April 5, 1963. He farmed for a number of years and then worked for Hach Chemical until his retirement.

He is survived by one brother, John Holland and his wife, Karen, of Roland; one son-in-law Peter McLean; grandsons Brent McLean, and Stanton McLean and his wife, Lane; one great-grandson Myles McLean; nieces and nephews Janet (Ron) Skogerboe, Shirley (Gary) Knous, Gary (Sandy) Sampson, Bruch Holland, Roger (Cindy) Holland, Ron (Rita) Carmicheal; their children; as well as many friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret, on March 10, 2002; his daughter, Janet McLean; two sisters LaVon Sampson and Mildred Carmicheal; and one brother-in-law Ted Sampson.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 8, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Roland. Family will be present during those hours.
