Charlie Drewes, 58, of Ames, died Monday, July 4. He was a professor in the ecology, evolution and organismal biology department at Iowa State University. A gathering of friends will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Adams Funeral Home.

Charles D. Drewes, 58, of Ames, died Monday, July 4, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. A memorial gathering of friends will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.

Charlie Drewes was born Sept. 11, 1946, in Bertha, Minn. to Henry and Meta Drewes. He received a bachelor's degree in biology from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1968, and a master's degree and a doctorate degree in zoology from Michigan State University in 1970 and 1973, respectively. He married Jacqueline Doyle on Aug. 22, 1973, in East Lansing, Mich.

After moving to Ames in 1974, he was appointed assistant professor at Iowa State University. He attained the rank of professor in 1981, and was honored with the title of "University Professor" in 2003. His numerous honors included Outstanding Teacher Award at ISU in 1991, Distinguished Iowa Science Teacher Award from the Iowa Academy of Science in 1998 and the Four-Year College Biology Teaching Award from the National Association of Biology Teachers in 2002. He mentored seven doctoral and 12 master's students in invertebrate neurobiology. Inspired by over a decade of his annual teaching workshops at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Lake Okoboji, he focused in recent years on the education of high school and college science teachers.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Drewes of Ames; one daughter, Steffi of San Francisco; one son, Thomas and his fiancee, Anne McLaughlin, of Atlanta; his parents, Henry and Meta Drewes of Decorah; one sister, Ellen Drewes-Stoen and her husband, Erik Stoen, of Decorah; one brother, John Drewes and beloved friend, Carol Warfel, of Red Wing, Minn.; Leo and Geraldine Doyle of Lansing, Mich.; members of the Doyle family; and many dear friends.
