Funeral Service for James M. Bales

Special to the Journal:
McCallsburg, Dec. 10--Funeral services for J. M. Bales, Story county pioneer, who passed away Nov. 26 at the home of his son Frank Bales in Ontario, Calif. was held at the Presbyterian church in Albion Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of a former pastor of that church Rev. S. C. Wadding now pastor of the Park Avenue Presbyterian church in Des Moines, assisted by Rev. R. Stanley Browne, pastor of the Presbyterian church in Marshalltown. The pall bearers all nephews, were Hart Collins, Ray D. Vail, A. W. Neff, Harry Dimmock, James Bales and Floyd Bales.

The music was furnished by a mixed quartette who sang two of deceased's favorite songs "No Night There" and "Transformed." Burial was made in the Albion cemetery. Mr. Bales was converted while a resident of Albion and during the pastorship of Rev. Wadding uniting with the church which continued to be his church home and was his request that the funeral services be held there.

James M. Bales was born in North Salem, Hendricks county, Indiana Jan. 25, 1851 and passed away Nov. 26 at Ontario, Cal., at the age of 84 years. He came west with his parents in 1853 and settled at Colo in 1859 where he was married to Miss Charlotte Brown of Colo, Jan. 25, 1881. Mr. and Mrs. Bales made their home in Colo one year when they moved on a farm 2 1/2 miles northeast of McCallsburg where they farmed 21 years. In 1903 they moved to Albion where they lived a number of years, then moved to Marshalltown where they lived the past 14 years. As was the usual custom of Mr. and Mrs. Bales they had gone to California to spend the winter and had left for there Nov. 18. Mr. Bales took cold on the trip and was quite sick but apparently was much improved and up and around the house when on Tuesday evening around sic o'clock he died quite suddenly with heart failure while seated in his chair, less than a week after his arrival there. The body accompanied by Mrs. Bales and son arrived in Marshalltown on Monday and funeral held Wednesday.

While they lived in the McCallsburg vicinity Mr. Bales attended the Presbyterian church and sang in the church choir, always being a lover of music. Mr. Bales is survived by the wife and son and one grandson, two brothers Will Bales of Colo, Geo. Bales of Winnebago, Minn., a sister Mrs. James Thornton of Colo, a large number of other relatives and a host of friends who extend their sympathy to Mrs. Baes and son.

Relatives in attendance at the funeral from away included the son Frank of Ontario, Cal., Mr. and Mrs. Will Bales and son Floyd, Mr. and Mrs. James Thornton of Colo, Geo. Bales and son James Bales of Winnebago, Minn., Russel and Thomas Bales, Rev. and Mrs. C. S. Wadding and daughter Esther of Des Moines, S. F. Brown of Council Bluffs, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Springer of Huntley, Minn., Geo. Brown and Dr. Curtis Brown of Traer, Wilson Hadley, New Providence, Mr. and Mrs. Ora Gerry and Mrs. Jessie Pickering, Eldora, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dimmock and daughter Viola, Mr. and Mrs. Ray D. Vail and family, N. A. Vail of Marshalltown and a good many relatives and friends from the Albion vicinity, Marshalltown and a few from McCallsburg.
