Funeral Services for Pioneer Zearing Woman Were Held

Special to the Journal.
Funeral services for Mrs. N. A. Perry, 90, Lincoln township pioneer, who died at her home here August 15, were held at the Church of Christ Sunday afternoon and interment was in the Zearing cemetery.

The funeral rites were in charge of her pastor, the Rev. Kenneth Tuttle and the music was by a mixed quartette, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Golly, G. B. Womeldorff and Myrtle Golly.

The pallbearers were N. H. Norton, E. F. Moore, C. P. Bean, G. W. Ely, John Campbell and George Phillips, while the flowers were in charge of Mrs. N. H. Norton.

Mary Ann Vandeventer, daughter of Lewis and Catherine Vandeventer, was born in Medina county, Ohio, April 8, 1845.

She, with her parents, moved to Lafayette county, Wisconsin, where they settled on a farm, and she grew to womanhood and became a teacher in the rural schools.

On October 9, 1870, she was married to N. A. Perry of Albany, Wis. To this union six children were born two dying in infancy. The others are Frank W. Perry, Zearing, Mrs. Myrtle Craft, LaPorte City; Mrs. Cecile Golly, Spencer and Ernest L. Perry of Zearing.

Mrs. Perry is the last member of her family with the exception of one sister, Mrs. Vina Bartine of Chicago.

Mr. and Mrs. Perry came to Iowa in 1871, later coming to Story county and settling on the home farm four and one-half miles east of Zearing, occupied by their son, Ernest and they lived there until December, 1906, when they retired to the present home in Zearing, where she lived until called away Thursday evening, August 15.

Mrs. Perry was among the real pioneers of the county, having seen the wild country develop into the rich, fertile land of today.

She was one of the charter members of the Zearing Church of Christ and was deeply interested in all the activities of the church and in the W. C. T. U., with which she was always taking an active part and doing her share as long as she was able and always ready and willing to help, not only in her own home but all with whom she came in contact.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, four children, twenty-one grand children and thirteen great-grand children, besides a number of relatives and friends.
