Funeral Services Held at Colo for Pioneer Woman

Colo, April 29--Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ann Brand, 83, Colo pioneer woman who died at her home here April 23, were held Sunday afternoon at the Calvary Evangelical church, with Rev. Wood, assisted by Rev. Charles Pickford of Nevada, in charge. Interment was in the Colo cemetery by the side of her husband who died a few years ago.Mary Ann Shepherd was born at Thornhill, Ontario, Canada, Jan. 16, 1853, and died at her home in Colo, April 23, 1936, aged 83 years, 3 months and 7 days.
She was the eldest daughter of Charles and Mary Shepherd. Two sisters and one brother preceded her in death. They were Miss Louise Shepherd of Colo, Mrs. Elizabeth Brunson of Brockport, N. Y., and Charles Shepherd of Colo. She came to the United States in 1870.
On July 2, 1884 she was united in marriage to Charles Brand at Sycamore, Ill. The following October they came to Story county, Iowa, where she has since made her home She leaves to mourn passing, her nephew Roy Shepherd of Colo and two nieces, Mossie and Nellie and a nephew Anival Shepherd, all of Toronto, Canada.
At the age of 14 she joined the Trinity Episcopal church at Youngstown, N. Y. and has lived a faithful Christian life. Mrs. Brand loved her Bible and read it daily, and practiced its teachings. She was loved and respected by all, and will be missed by her many friends.
